Aula Carolina - former Church of St. Catherine's Monastery, owned by the Augustinian Order - is located in the historic center of Aachen. The first mention of the construction of a temple on the site belongs to the 13th century.

In 1275, Augustinian monks who arrived in the city, were transferred to the use of the dilapidated chapel with a small apartment house. They rebuilt the chapel in the monastery church. Thanks to the personal intercession and financial support in Aachen crowned Emperor Charles IV to the Monastery of St. Catherine in 1351 significantly expanded its possessions. As a result, a large urban fire in 1656 the construction of the monastery, including the Aula Carolina, were virtually destroyed.

May 11, 1663 was consecrated new extant building of the monastery church, which was built on the same foundation. As a result of the secularization of the period of the French occupation of St. Catherine's monastery was dissolved, Aula Carolina and his other buildings were used for other purposes. Since 1804 to 1903 the building of the former monastery served as quarters for the gymnasium of Emperor Charles. From that time till today the Aula Carolina was used as a school and town hall for concerts, meetings, exhibitions and other events.

During the Second World War the building was badly damaged by bombing. Only in 1980 it was completely restored and renewed in its present form.
