Art Gallery is located in the heart of the capital of New Zealand - Wellington - Museo Civico of Square Park. Open in 1980, Gallery has played a huge role in the formation of both the capital Wellington. Its present building took only gallery in 1993.

In 2009 it was made complete reconstruction of the building, which lasted a whole year. During the reconstruction of the Gallery were discovered three rooms, including a room for art exhibitions of Maori and Pacific peoples, as well as a new audience for the lectures. In September 2009, the Gallery was reopened to the public. First, after the reconstruction of the collection was a personal exhibition of the famous artist Yayoi Kusama Japanese.

Galleries feature is that it does not have its own permanent collection. There is always exposed to different works, united by one theme. Also here you can see the personal exhibition of world-famous artists such as Keith Haring, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Tracey Emin, Sidney Nolen, Bridget Riley, Stanley Spensoer and many others. Also in the Gallery his solo exhibitions by renowned New Zealand master Rita Agnes, Shane Cotton, Bill Hammond, Lawrence Aberhart Ralph Hoter, Tony Fomison and others.

In addition to the visits of tourists Gallery is hosting a group of students in primary and secondary schools as part of education programs from all over New Zealand. Besides the standard activities for the students, the teacher can choose the topics and the course of training students in the Gallery. Also regularly hosts lectures, workshops, meetings and conversations.

In 1998 the Art Gallery has organized his own foundation, which can enter into anyone. Each member of the Foundation has its advantages, the region depends on the level of membership.

For those who want to relax and have a snack, the Gallery has a small cozy cafe Nikau Gallery Cafe, located on the first floor, in the open air.
