Vitebsk church in honor of the Assumption of Mary was built on the site of a wooden prayer house of Old Believers in 1852. The new church was built to the glory - spacious white stone square with a rounded altar wall and tall slender bell tower. It's not like the local Orthodox clergy, which is in the middle of the XIX century in Vitebsk supported the secular power.
In the middle of the XIX century the Old Believers in Vitebsk were closed affluent communities. Fleeing persecution Nikonian church, Vitebsk after entering into the Russian Empire moved in Old Believer community.
The official reason confiscation of the church in favor of the Orthodox Church of Old Believers became involved in anti-government riots. October 19 the church was re-consecrated by the Archbishop of Polotsk and Vitebsk Basil (Luzhin), in favor of strengthening the Orthodox in the former Polish lands.
After the revolution, the church bell tower was destroyed. In Soviet times, Assumption Church, as well as other churches in Vitebsk, was closed. In 1954 it was decided to transfer the derelict dilapidated building for the needs of the Pedagogical Institute.
In 1997, the building was given to the Orthodox Church. Reconstruction. Rebuilt the bell tower and the dome is installed. The temple brought Orthodox shrines: St. Theophan the Recluse, right. John the Russian, VIC. Barbara martyr. Mamas, svsch. martyr. Vladimir. Currently, the Assumption Church of Vitebsk Sunday school and Orthodox sisterhood.
