White Kovel Castle in Smolyan - Volyn princes Sangushek residence, built in 1626 on the border of Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Russia. In the XVII century the border clashes between the two countries occurred constantly, so it was very important that the prince's residence could survive the enemy attack, and even the siege, but still it was a princely residence, not a fortress, because the castle was built in the Renaissance style. Dutch architect to supervise the construction.

White Kovel Castle looked like a well-known nowadays reconstructed Mir Castle - Castle area 100 x 200 meters was surrounded on all sides by water. The castle was surrounded by high walls, built of large brick and rough stone. The wall thickness was 1, 5 meters. In every corner of the wall rose watch towers, which in addition to defense, there were residential areas.

The internal structure of the castle was three stories with large windows, decorated with architraves with the Dutch pattern. The whole castle was more like a Dutch rather than Belarusian.

The name "White Kovel" castle princes gave Sangushko longing for his estate in Kovel, on which once was made the exchange between Sangushko and fugitive prince of Moscow Andrei Kurbsky, received Smalany as a generous gift from the Government of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

In the XVII century White Kovel became a cultural center of the country. Being a large tract traveler on the way from Moscow to Europe, hospitable owners have hosted many famous guests. During the Northern War White Kovel belonged to Paul Karol Sangushko, who spoke in the war on the side of the Swedes and placed in his castle Swedish garrison. Russian troops were able to take a lock, but I understand that will not be able to keep it, so, on the orders of Peter I, the castle was blown up.

Gradually dilapidated and confiscated after the Russian treasury partition of Poland the castle was demolished in the building material. It saves only one five-storied central tower.

White Kovel Castle is included in the plan for the restoration of cultural monuments of Belarus for the next 5 years.
