The National Museum of Prehistory "Balzi Rossi" is a cave not far from Ventimiglia, located almost on the border with France, one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe. The caves are located near the village of Grimaldi - they are formed in a high cliff, abruptly into the sea. The name they got for the red color of the walls. The first explorers of these places have a French scientist Saussure and Prince Florestan I of Monaco. And at the end of the 19th century on the initiative of the Englishman Thomas Hanbury in love with this part of Liguria, it was created by the Archaeological Museum.
Today you can fairly accurately be said that in the caves of Balzi Rossi since the time of the Lower Paleolithic settled primitive people, and during the Upper Paleolithic were adapted into the crypt. The museum, with its models of caves in different time periods provides a unique opportunity to trace the history of local settlements. And among the most prominent places can be called "Tripliche Sepoltura" - Triple grave, which was discovered in a grotto Barma Grande. In the tomb were found the remains of an adult male unusually high growth - 190 cm, and two young men - all of them were buried in a pit. In the same tomb were found a variety of funerary objects. Another important burial in the grotto is Grotta dei Fanchulli - there were found the skeletons of two children and a lot of shells. Human remains found in the caves belong to the so-called race Grimaldi and belong to a group of Cro-Magnon.
The grottoes Barma Grande and Principe were also found 15 statues carved from the bones - so-called Venus, which are female figurines with large breasts and thighs, which are likely to have been a symbol of fertility. The important finds are fossils of elephants, rhinos and hippos, as well as reindeer (the latter belong to a later geological period). And one of the interesting sights of Balzi Rossi is the image of the Przewalski horse, made primitive hudozhnkiom about 20 thousand years ago.
