The city of Varna is the church, which is named in honor of St. Nicholas of Myra. It is located on the main street in the sea capital of Bulgaria and is, along with the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the city.
According to legend, the temple was built because of the promise made to God by a Russian merchant marine. During one of his journeys in the sea a strong storm broke. Scared trader turned to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and fishermen, with a plea: if he stays alive and safely get to the house, then certainly in Varna will build a church in honor of the saint. The promise was fulfilled - the trader has allocated for the construction of the temple of 50 000 rubles. Historians say that it is perhaps the only case in which the church was built at the expense of only one person.
Construction of the basilica began in 1859 and continued for several years. It is not known when the church was consecrated, and when he was made the iconostasis. For a long time the walls of the temple were white. Only in 1961, a group led by Professor Nicholas and Dimitri Kozhuharova Gyudzhenova began work on the decoration of the church frescoes. In 2000 it was carried out extensive restoration work, during which the mural was restored at the altar, in the new stained glass windows are inserted, renovated porch, etc.
Beautiful monumental Basilica of St. Nicholas is the only sea temple in Bulgaria.
