Souk el-Attarine was built in the middle of the XIII century on the orders of Abu Zakaria - the ruler of the dynasty Hafsids. This market is close to the Medina (the town square) in the Alexandrian Attarine quarter on the street, just around the corner from the Roman amphitheater. The fact that he is close to Zitouna Mosque (or Al-Zaytuna) is not by chance - before the entrance to the building has been allowed only for people involved in a noble profession. Merchants definitely be treated.

Souk el Atarin is the oldest market in Tunis. Modern Souk el-Attarine - a picturesque quarter of the city, which emerged on the site of a medieval perfume market. From the very beginning of its existence it has specialized in the sale of cosmetics and perfumes. The first merchants who traded in this market came from the Arab countries of the East and traded very expensive and not all available products.

Like any Arab souk, Souk El-Attarine is a maze of narrow alleys and small streets, cluttered on both sides of a wide variety of shops and stores. How many centuries ago, the market is considered a place of trade in the most unusual products, and although there is no longer the diversity was found in the old days, there still can be ordered aromatic mixture or buy Indian incense, henna, all kinds of spices, candles and herbs.
