Troyan Monastery of the Assumption - is impressive Orthodox monastery, is the third largest in Bulgaria. It is located in a picturesque location on the slopes of Stara Planina (Balkan), 10 kilometers from the town of Troyan and near the village of Oreshak. Close to the home of flowing river Cherni Osam.

Due to the surviving references in written sources it was found that the monastery was built in the XVII century. Its founder is considered to be the abbot Callistratus.

In 1835, a solemn ceremony of consecration of the new church, built on the site of the former. The building, built by Constantine the master of Peshtera is a temple of the cross-dome type with porch, arched gallery and a five-sided apse in the altar area. In 1847-1849 gg. the building was decorated with murals. Works occupy an outstanding representative of the Samokov School, a famous Bulgarian painter Zahari Zograf. The frescoes depict scenes from the Holy Scriptures ("The Last Judgement", etc.), The saints, Jesus Christ and others. The abbey church survived skillful carved wooden iconostasis of the late 30-ies of the XIX century, and in the chapel of St.. Nicholas - earlier carved royal gates.

Bell tower was built in 1866 under the guidance of a master from the village of Ivan Mlechevo.

Troyan Monastery was a center of the Enlightenment in the late XIX century. Now here is a library where you can get acquainted with the rich collection of various publications. During the struggle for the liberation of the Bulgarian monastery was a place of refuge of many revolutionaries.
