Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary - the world's northernmost Catholic cathedral, built in the Gothic Revival style and has around 500 parishioners of different nationalities, most of them - the Norwegians, Poles and Filipinos.
The original cathedral was built as a private residence of the bishop. In 1860 the building was handed over to the Catholic Church, and a year later the cathedral was consecrated. The cathedral is located next to the city area of Tromsø, in the heart of the city.
During its existence, the cathedral suffered a lot. During the Second World War there was a camp for refugees in 1969, the church was severely damaged by fire, but pretty soon it was restored. Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary also served as a Catholic school, and in 1989 he was visited by Pope John Paul II.
