Preparation for construction of the main Siberian stone cathedral was conducted for nearly three years. From Moscow sent permission to use the peasants in the building, but not in the summer. And sent the sample on which it was necessary to build a church. The temple was built by experienced masons Moscow in alliance with Ustiug team of builders. Construction began in 1683 and completed in 1686, the same year the first in Siberia, a stone church was consecrated. Cathedral of the Assumption was called first, but was later renamed St. Sophia.
The temple is located on the top of Cape Trinity and from the cool down takes vzvoz stone. In 1751 the northern facade of the cathedral was built Zlatoust chapel, it is located in the cathedral sacristy.
From the Italian Renaissance culture in St. Sophia Cathedral you can see the geometric cubic volume and the completion of the temple and decoration of facades solved in the old Russian style. Interior Sofiskogo cathedral is typical of a large four-pillar temple. Originally the cathedral was painted inside, but soon the walls of the church were covered with frescoes. According to some of the author was a famous painter Roman Nikitin, who was exiled with his brother in Tobolsk after the death of Peter I. In the mid-19th century frescoes were closed oil painting, but soon it was decided on the restoration of frescoes.
