Bronze Horseman - monument to Peter I, who is on the Senate Square. Monument got its name from the famous poem of the same name by Alexander Pushkin.

Equestrian statue of Peter the sculptor Etienne Falconet in 1768-1770 by order of Empress Catherine II. Head molded disciple Peter Falcone, Marie-Anne Collot. The casting of the statue under a master Yemelyan Haylova was completed in 1778. For the pedestal of the monument from the vicinity of Lahti was delivered a giant granite boulder, "Thunder-stone." The stone weighed 1,600 tons. Path "Thunder-stone" to the point of hoisting the sculpture lasted for one and a half years: for him was built barge and overland lump dragged by a copper gutter balls.

The monument is unique in that it has only three points of support: the hind legs of a horse and the tail of a snake writhing. To sculpture acquired resistance, the master had to facilitate its front part, because the thickness of the walls of the front of the bronze is much thinner than the rear wall, which greatly complicated the casting of the monument.

By order of Catherine II, carved on the pedestal: "Peter the Great Catherine the Great."
