Charles Gates, built in 1570, belonged to the complex of the fortress wall that surrounded the city in the Middle Ages. The gate was named in honor of St. Charles Borromeo, who, according to one legend, was the first to pass through the gate man. The gate is decorated with stone reliefs depicting the Crucifixion, and the abbot of St. Gall, Otmar.
