The Church of Holy Week - is Orthodox Cathedral in Sofia, named in honor of the Holy Great Week.
About the early history of the church remained a bit of information. Presumably, the first church on this site was built in the X century - a wooden building stood on a stone foundation. Until the middle of the XIX century church, unlike other temples in the city, it was still wooden. Temple of Holy Week - is an impressive structure, initially reaches a length of 35, 5 and 19 meters - in width. Its construction dragged on for six years (in part - because of what happened in 1858, a devastating earthquake) - from 1856 to 1963. Bell tower was built later - in 1879. It was established 8 bells, donated new temple Prince Dondukov-Korsakov.
Its modern look church gained after extensive reconstruction, produced in the 20-30 years. the last century - in 1925, a bomb exploded here and killed more than 200 people. Under the guidance of architects Tsolova and Vasiliev was built a new church building in the neo-Byzantine style. The current size of the building up 30h15, 5 meters, the height of the main dome reaches 31 meters.
The interior space of the church is decorated with frescoes painted between 1971 and 1973, a group of artists under the direction of Nikolai Rostovtsev. One of the main values of the temple is a gilded iconostasis outstanding master Stanislav Dospevski.
