During the liberation war against the Turks in Bulgaria killed many Russian military. In the Bulgarian city in their honor monuments and memorials, and in front of the Sofia News Agency on Tsarigorodskom highway erected a monument to Russian Guards, also known as the Monument to the Russian generals. It is devoted to the generals DA Filosofova and VV Katale, who died in 1877, 21 of December.
On this day, the Turks pursued a third Guards Infantry Division retreated from Tashkesena, Shandornika and Arabakonak. Vasily Katale, Lieutenant-General, Chief of Division, and Dmitri Philosophers, Major General, commander of the First Brigade, went to the head of the column. The rear guard of Turkish troops organized an ambush that was well disguised, at the entrance to the gorge Petrichskoe near the village of Mirkovo. From a distance of seven hundred steps Turks had opened fire with rifles, who came mainly on the division commander and his entourage. Vasily Katale was shot dead on the spot and seriously injured Philosophers on the same day he died in Orhan.
Guards monument in 1885, was built on the donations that have made the Third Infantry Division serving Guardsmen. Almost half a century later, in 1942, on the orders of an officer of the Bulgarian-fascist monument was destroyed. Its fully restored only in 1978, one hundred years after the memorable historical events. But later, in 1989, when power was removed from the Communist Party of Bulgaria, of the monument are not cared neither gosinstantsy. Looters and vandals destroyed the monument by removing the part of the cladding and metal products.
Several years ago, the Guards again restored monument, its grand opening was held in 2008, the 19 of February. The event was attended by representatives of the Bulgarian and the Russian side - diplomats, politicians, officers and cultural figures.
