About 5 km north of Skiathos town on the same island is the monastery of Panagis Evangelista. Holy Monastery is located on the picturesque mountainside, surrounded by lush vegetation (mostly pines).

Panagis Evangelista Monastery has important religious significance and is one of the main attractions of the island, as well as one of the most important religious centers in the archipelago Northern Sporades. The monastery was founded in 1794 and built by the monks of Mount Athos's drawings brought from the holy Mount Athos. The building directly involved local monk Grigorios Karastamatis monk from the island of Chios Niphon, which actually was the first abbot of the monastery until 1809.

The monastery complex covers an area of ​​over 2,000 square meters. m. Some buildings are located strictly on the perimeter, thus forming, the monastery walls. KATHOLIKON temple is the church of cruciform architecture with three domes, which are covered with slate gray tiles. Here is preserved stunning wood carved iconostasis. The monastery also has a chapel of St. John and St. Demetrius.

During the Greek War of Independence, the monastery played an important role as a refuge for Greek rebels. Here in September 1807 he took the oath of such well-known leaders of the Greek revolution, Theodoros Kolokotronis like, Andreas Miaoulis-Vokos and other rebels. At the same time, the monastery has been woven, and blessed abbot raised the first Greek national flag. In 1839, by the decision of the Synod of the monastery he was exiled philosopher Theophilus Kairys and spent 5 months. Since 1850, the importance of the monastery began to decline and gradually decreased and the number living on its territory monks.

In the monastery there is a small church museum. The exhibition presents his monastic robes, rare books and manuscripts of the 17th century, the Gospel of the 18th century, wooden and silver crosses, Byzantine icons and other church relics. The building, where the old olive press, posted Folklore Museum. Also in the monastery regularly hosts exhibitions of local products, which produce the monks. All of them are of high quality and prepared according to traditional recipes from pure raw materials, but, however, have a limited number.
