Park Moerenuma remarkable that in 70-80s of the last century was built on the site of the former city landfill, the area which has been found to be unsuitable for any construction or for human habitation. Moerenuma is not a traditional Japanese garden, on the contrary, it is a park, divided in accordance with modern concepts of landscape design. In the early 2000s Moerenuma was awarded the main prize of the prestigious Japanese design competition Good design.
The park was designed by Isamu Noguchi began - the famous Japanese sculptor, architect and stage designer, united in his work East and West. In his projects were built parks in Paris, Miami, Jerusalem and other cities around the world. Park Moerenuma became his last work, which he did not have time to finish - the artist died in 1988 in New York. Completion took place under the supervision of his colleagues. In memory of the artist in the main building of the park - 30-meter-high glass pyramid Hidamari was created gallery of his work.
Moerenuma Park is located in the north-east of Sapporo and is part of the so-called "green belt" surrounding the city. Its name means "marsh". Preparation for construction has been launched to landfill in 1970, and major work started in 1982 - to this place brought the fertile land and planted trees. Park Master Plan was developed in 1988 alone.
The main building of the park, in addition to gallery Isamu Noguchi, are also viewing platforms, showrooms, cafes and restaurants. Another attraction Moerenumy - artificial mountain, on top of it is another observation deck, which offers not only views of the park, but also the panoramic view of the city. Next to the man-made mountain is a gigantic sculpture - a 13-meter pyramid of steel beams. For concerts and shows in the park was built pavilion "Sea Shell". In one area of the park there are seven children's playgrounds, equipped with various devices for outdoor games: swings, slides, ladders, etc.
Center of the park, according to the Isamu Noguchi, had become the "Fountain of the sea" with two bowls, placed one inside the other, a pillar of water from which rises to a height of 25 meters. Light show "Water Symphony" with the participation of the fountain runs three times a day.
