Museum of Contemporary Art is the exhibition venue of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Chile and is currently housed in two buildings: the Museum of Contemporary Art in Forest Park is located at the rear of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Santiago and the Museum of Modern Art Park Quinta Normal, which is housed in the Palace of Versailles.
The main purpose of the museum agreed to the plans of the University - to study the variety of new trends shaping the modern cultural life, to represent the public new opportunities in the arts. The exhibition features approximately 2,000 works of Chilean and foreign artists from the end of the XIX century: paintings, drawings, watercolors and sculptures.
The museum was opened in 1947 in the interaction of the University of Chile, and the Institute of Fine Arts of Santiago. Initially the museum are placed in the building known as the Parthenon Park Quinta Normal. In 1974 the museum moved to the Palace of Fine Arts in Forest Park. This building was built in neoclassical style by architect Emilio Dzhekkuera the centennial of the Republic of Chile. It was subjected to severe destruction of several fires and earthquakes, but after the restoration work re-opens its doors, extending the exhibition halls. Before the main entrance to the museum, a sculpture horses donated by the city Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero. In 1976, the building was declared a national monument of Chile.
The Palace of Versailles was built in 1918 in the French style of the early XX century by the architect Alberto Cruz Montt. The original three-story building area of 5400 sq.m. It planned to give for placing it in the National Society of Agriculture, but in 1934 it was transferred to the University of Chile Faculty of Agriculture. In the early 70s the building housed the service of the Hospital San Juan de Dios. As in 2005, carried out the restoration of the museum in Forest Park, it was decided to use the building of the Palace of Versailles for temporary accommodation there collections of the Museum of Modern Art. A year after the 2010 earthquake, the damaged building of the palace was restored with funds donated by the German government. Currently, there are exhibited experimental works of contemporary artists and architects.
