Eisriesenwelt - limestone ice cave located near the wharf, approximately 40 km from Salzburg. The cave is located in the mountain Tennengebirge is the largest ice cave in the world. Its length is over 42 km, each year the cave is visited by about 200 thousand tourists.
The first official discovery of Eisriesenwelt was made from Salzburg naturalist Anton Posselt in 1879. He studied only the first 200 meters of the cave to him about the cave known by locals who thought that this was the entrance to hell. In 1880, Posselt published his findings in the journal about climbing, but the report was quickly forgotten.
Alexander von Merck, speleologist from Salzburg, was one of the few people who remembered Posselt opening. He led several expeditions to the cave since 1912. The cave is open to visitors during the summer period from May 1 to October 26 of each year. The tour lasts just over an hour, tourists are advised to carry warm clothing and comfortable shoes. Lanterns are issued at the entrance.
