On a rocky hill Festungberg in the XI century fortress was built as a refuge for Hohensalzburg Salzburg archbishops. It was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded, and its current view of the fortress acquired by 1500. In the XIX century it housed military barracks, then the fortress was used as a prison.

This is the largest completely preserved fortress of Central Europe. Thick walls surround the Archbishop's Palace, the Church of St. George, various residential and farm buildings.

Corner tower Rekturm once served as a prison. There remained a torture chamber. The tower Glokkenturm through which you can get into the living quarters of the building, before hanging bells. Survived two towers - Hare and brimstone, located in a small area on the ramparts. Everywhere you can see a lot of guns, often aimed at the city.

In the palace of particular interest is the Gold room with an elegant Gothic stove (1501), decorated with majolica and decorated with figures. The exposition of the Castle Museum tells the history of the castle and its owners.
