Nonnberg abbey is the female Benedictine monastery, located in Salzburg, Austria. The abbey had a great influence on the formation of Salzburg.
Nonnberg Monastery was founded in 714 by Saint Rupert, whose sister became its first abbess. The monastery is the oldest women's religious house in the German-speaking world. Abbey financed Theudebert, Duke of Bavaria and Emperor Henry II, who was also the Duke of Bavaria.
Abbey was reconstructed several times, and in 1423 it was almost completely destroyed by a terrible fire. The reconstruction took place between 1464 and 1509 years. In 1624 the church was expanded to include the construction of three side chapels. In 1880 the monastery was rebuilt in Baroque style.
Until 1451 the monastery could get only women from noble families, later extended to permit representatives of the middle class.
Chapel of St. John is open to the public only with the permission of the monastery. This chapel with magnificent arched ceiling was built from 1448 to 1451. The altar in the chapel of the DOS has not succeeded to date. There is speculation that it was created in 1498.
The monastery is a large collection of medieval manuscripts, Gothic figures and pictures (mostly late Gothic). Of particular note is "Faldistrorium" - a folding chair for the abbess from 1100 sculpted reliefs, which was created in 1242.
It is thanks to one of the nuns - Maria Augusta Kutschera, who later married Captain von Trapp, the monastery gained international fame. The fact that the book was withdrawn Mary famous film "The Sound of Music."
