Municipal Art Gallery of Rhodes (or Art Gallery) is located in the historic capital of the island of the same name. Gallery is located in an old two-storey building at Symi Square and belongs to the Museum of Modern Greek Art of Rhodes municipality. The magnificent medieval building is considered an important historical and architectural monument of the city.
Municipal Gallery was founded excellent connoisseur of modern Greek art and prefect of the Dodecanese Andreas Ioannou in 1950. At a time when even the National Gallery in Athens, focused its interests in the painting is not older than the 19th century, John Andreas has made every effort to collect, preserve and adequately represent the work of talented young Greek artists. The gallery features works by artists born after 1863. Today Rhodes Art Gallery owns one of the best collections of modern Greek painting. Just a collection of the gallery collected about 700 magnificent paintings, but only 90 of them are available to the public in a permanent exhibition. Many of the paintings were presented at the official exhibitions, both in Greece and in other countries.
