One of them is based on the chronicle of bishop Jehoiakim earlier chronicler than Nestor. This chronicle reports that Vladimirets mountain is named after one of the sons of the Slavic prince Vandal that each of them built his castle. So, Izborsk was named in honor of his son Izbor and Vladimirets, respectively, in honor of Vladimir. The other version reflects the view that the mountain is named in honor of Prince Vladimir. It is expected that before becoming Prince of Kiev and baptized Rus in the 10th century, he spent his childhood and adolescence in these places. If we stick to this version, it is strengthening existed in 10-11 century.
On the mountain Vladimirets was a fortress, which was built to defend against the attacks of neighboring Novgorod. She was fortifications, the south-eastern outpost of the Pskov land. The remains of the fortifications and the bulk of the shaft survived. In the south of the fortress was a well, which is now covered with earth. To the west was a step descent. On the eastern mound was a hiding place. It is believed that the boards of its arches and steps bell tower was built at the church of St. Nicholas. On the same hill as the chronicles in 1462, it was built the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of Myra. According to legend, during one of the attacks of enemies, unable to overcome the offensive, believers gathered in the temple and disappeared underground.
According to documents in the 16th century there was a monastery founded by Christmas. In the 18th century, after the decree of Catherine the Great, the monastery was closed. But the temple of St. Nicholas remained. Stone temple, which survived to our time, was built in 1797. It added two chapels: the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and St. Dimitry of Rostov. Therefore, this place was chosen for the construction of the temple.
Despite numerous attacks opponents, fires and wars, the greatest damage was caused to the temple in the 20th century.
