Saviour-Euphrosyne Convent in Polotsk - an ancient Orthodox monastery, the creator and abbess of which was the legendary St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk.

Yefrosinya (Predislava in the world) was the daughter of Prince Svyatoslav-George and the Princess Sophia. The princess grew bookish child, I love old books and church wisdom. She was famous for her beauty and intelligence. In 1120, being only 12 years old, she went to the monastery, in secret from his father, who wanted to marry her. Then, seeing the three prophetic dream of the Church of the Holy Saviour, which stands in the hamlet, she went to this holy place and founded a monastery there. Miraculously, by the prayers of the Mother Superior Yefrosinya temple Merciful Saviour was built in just 30 weeks.

Euphrosyne ordered a goldsmith Lazar Bogsch precious altar cross-Ark, decorated in the Byzantine style pearls and precious stones. The particles were made cross Cross on which Christ was crucified with a drop of blood of the Lord, small pieces of stones of the Holy Sepulcher and the Holy Mother of God, and the relics of Orthodox saints. This sacred relic was kept in the monastery and attracts thousands of pilgrims who were left in the monastery of generous donations.

During his lifetime, Euphrosyne convent and made her hometown thriving center for the arts, education, literacy and divine wisdom.

In 1563, when Polotsk was besieged by Ivan the Terrible, ended the golden age of Polotsk. Soon, in 1579 the city was taken by the troops of the Stefan Batory Foundation, the monastery looted and given to the Jesuits.

Only in 1833 the monastery was returned to the Orthodox Church. He was soon restored. In the monastery the sisters settled. In 1928 the monastery was looted and closed. Just a short time he worked at Polotsk occupation by Hitler's troops. However, during the occupation mysteriously disappeared precious Cross of Saint Euphrosyne. His whereabouts is not known to this day. In Soviet times, the monastery was closed.

Today, the revival of the monastery began in 1989, when the monastery buildings were returned to the Orthodox Church. Now, as in ancient times, nine centuries ago, the Saviour Monastery Euphrosyne is a thriving spiritual center of Belarus. The Cross of St. Euphrosyne was recreated on the sketches. Now copy is kept in the Holy Euphrosyne Monastery and sometimes traveling the Belarusian cities, blessing them for prosperity.
