The largest and oldest in the province Phetburi Kaphaeng Laeng Temple was originally a Khmer temple of the ancient period, the famous Bayon, a century later, there were Buddhists and radically changed it. According to some, the base of Wat Kamphaeng Laeng falls on the XII-XIII century BC. e.
The name of the temple is based on the name of the building material from which it was created: laterite. Translated "Kaphaeng" means "wall" and "Lang" - the same material laterite.
The walls of the temple are still preserved original archways called khopura. But the frescoes on the walls are the work of the Buddhist era Dvaravati, you can see the classic scene with naked (mythical serpent) and Garuda (eagle-man), represents the struggle between heaven and earth. The subtlety of the work for which they were created murals and impressive centuries later.
Despite all the efforts of Buddhist temple Khmer past makes itself felt. At the heart of Wat Kamphaeng Laeng are 5 phrangov (like corn on the cob stupa), representing classical Khmer architecture. Unfortunately, to date the temple survived only 4 of them.
The temple is located in a quiet place, where you do not disturb the noisy groups of tourists.
