Karelian State Puppet Theater is located in a modern theater complex, designed by architect Taev EG, near the Karelian National Theatre. The funds for its construction and equipment of the most modern technologies have been allocated from the budgets of the Republic of Karelia and the Russian Federation. It is a professional theater, it opened in 1935, it is one of the oldest puppet theaters in Russia. Its founders were students courses SV Obraztsova, actors of the Theatre of Working Youth. Russia won the National Award "Golden Mask" performances for adults: "Gilded foreheads" Shergina B. (2007), "Dog's Tale" Karel Capek (2009). One of the areas of creative activity of the theater, began the development of international projects and participate in them. Together with the municipality of the city of Oulu in Finland has carried out a theater project development and organization of many amateur puppet theater for children and youth, both in Finland and in Karelia.

Since June 2003, a festival of "Kuklantida". This National Festival is held every two years, thanks to his skills are acquired and consolidated statement of puppet shows, there is a creative exchange between theater companies.

The theater participates in international and Russian festivals. In October 2007, he was held VI Festival of Puppet Theatres of the Barents Region. Countries participants in this festival: Russia, Estonia, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Finland. This international festival is held every two years. It reflects the traditions of the northern peoples, it is a cultural association with a certain perception of the world, but is open also for teams from other EU countries.
