The museum is located near the romantic life of Montmartre, behind the arch gate of the house number 16 on the street Chaptal. If you look at it, you can see a beautiful garden, and in the end of a long alley - like mansion box.

Here, in 1830 he settled a native of the Netherlands painter Ary Scheffer, a representative of the Romantic movement in art. At the time, he taught art to children of the Duke of Orleans, and he became king, Louis-Philippe, invited artist to the court. Thus, Schaeffer has numerous connections, his house quickly became one of the famous secular salons of Paris.

In this house regularly visited the famous writer George Sand, Chopin and Liszt composer, poet Lamartine, painters Delacroix, Ingres, Gericault. Scheffer visited Salon writers Charles Dickens and Ivan Turgenev, composer Gioacchino Rossini.

Son-Schaeffer became known Bible scholar, historian and philosopher Ernest Renan - his work "The Life of Jesus Christ" made a lasting impression on European society. Here, on the street Chaptal, was Renan's office. The controversial personality of the scientist, his fearlessness and brilliant journalistic added cabin appeal.

Now the Museum of romantic life - one of the three literary museums of Paris (along with an exhibition devoted to Balzac and Victor Hugo). The entire first floor is dedicated to the writer George Sand, which is never lived, but often spent time. In the early XX century, the granddaughter of the writer Aurora Lot Sand gave the museum a collection of things his famous grandmother. One of the rooms is completely reproduces the beauty of the estate of George Sand in Nohant. Here you can see the original pen and inkwell writer, a medallion with a lock of her hair, portraits of Sand and her family. Immediately - a cast of Chopin's hand, made during the life of the great composer.

On the second floor you can see the interior, telling about the life of the court painter of the XIX century. Portraits on the walls and easels for the most part represent the beautiful ladies of that era - such as the great Pauline Viardot, which was in love Ivan Turgenev. Rooms are decorated with beautiful trinkets, fine furnishings.

Museum of romantic life was created by the descendants of Schaeffer and long remained private. In 1983, he became a state. Admission is free.
