The Church of Santa Caterina is located in the historic center of Palermo, adjacent to the monastery, founded in the 14th century by monks of the Dominican Order. Construction of the church began in 1566 and was completed only in the late 16th century - in 1596. The dome and the choir were added respectively in the middle of the 17th century and in 1863. One of the facades of Santa Caterina goes to the central square of Piazza Pretoria, a fountain topped with the same name, and the second - on the Piazza Bellini, on which the beautiful church of Martorana and San Cataldo.

A special device allowed the nuns of the main hall, while remaining invisible to participate in the liturgy - the choruses placed at the entrance by means of two support columns. Interior decoration, as in most other churches of Palermo, consists of luxurious marble finishes and murals that harmoniously fit into the architectural elements of the bearing. Among the artists who worked on the decoration of the church, is to provide Filippo Randazzo, author of "The Triumph of Saint Catherine" and "Glory of the Dominicans," written in 1744, and Vito D'Anna, creator of paintings "The triumph of the Dominican Order" and "Allegory of the continents", written in the second half of the 18th century.

Near the church there are various tourist attractions of the city - the historic area of ​​Quattro Canti, the Palazzo dei Normanni, Teatro Massimo, and the city administration building, located in the Palazzo Pretorio in the eponymous square.
