Chapel St. Cross in Opava is considered one of the most interesting architectural and historical monuments of the city. She appeared in 1394 on the orders of Prince Przhemeka - one of the Přemyslid. The temple is decorated in the traditional colors of the coat of arms of Opava. During its construction were used as blocks of stone or brick. The chapel has an octagonal shape and is equipped with two carved portals. It is built in a simple, concise Gothic style. In the XV century, its interior arches were decorated with paintings, the theme of which was related to the coming end of the world. Unfortunately, these frescoes have survived one small piece, but the brightness of its colors can understand what effect these images made believers of that time.
During the Thirty Years War the Swedish troops occupied the city of Opava, who was chosen for himself the chapel of the Holy Cross, and began to carry it Protestant service. Since that time, the chapel was attached to the second name - the Swedish chapel.
In 1785, the chapel became part of the private ownership and was used for other purposes. The new owner kept it under the arches of grain and other products, treated its interior without piety, so not worried disappearance of some frescoes. In 1866, the Chapel of the Holy Cross is once again for worship. Around her are beginning to bury those who had died of cholera, so under the arches of the temple, in the main, seek comfort relatives of the victims.
In the early XX century, it becomes clear that the city may lose the temple, if not immediately take his restoration. To upgrade the interior finishes are hiring the best artists of the time.
In 1995, the chapel took under his protection the Czech state.
