Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin in Novorossiysk - one of the religious sites of the city, enjoys the same attention from tourists. It is also called: the Church of Our Lady "Joy of All Who Sorrow," and the people - Who Sorrow Cathedral, Virgin Cathedral, Cathedral of the Assumption.
Construction began due to start operation at the end of 1891 the town cemetery Novorossiysk. Its territory is adjacent to the street Anapa now - street species, and then occupied an area of about 20,000 square yards (9 hectares). On the territory of the cemetery land, at the expense of the citizens and the City Duma in late 1891 it began construction of the Assumption Church. And in November 1894 the construction of the church was completed and the City Council considered the question of the allocation of funds in the amount of 300 rubles for its consecration. In 1894 it was consecrated as the Church of All Who Sorrow. The people in the Duma called Assumption Church Cemetery, but official sources indicated those years - "City cemetery at the Church of the Assumption."
The church was closed in 1937, but during the Second World War it began to recover and church services began as early as the autumn of 1942. Old-timers say that the service at Easter in 1943 did not stop even during the shelling of German howitzers. Since 1945 - the only Orthodox church in the city.
In terms of religious architecture - it's a small one-domed church with a rectangular dining room and porch. Now, the cemetery is the hospital for the military at the beginning of this century, it completed a new big bell tower, the church stall, landscaped area around the temple. Currently, the cathedral belongs to the ROC and has the status of current.
Unfortunately, broke out in November 2011, a fire destroyed the temple, leaving only the walls. For donations of people and entrepreneurs with financial and organizational support of the city authorities and the ROC extends its recovery.
