Castle Hill is not high (total height of 92 meters), and no castle there. This park, which offers perhaps the best view of Nice. The name of the place captures the history of a very different Nice - menacing, belligerent, pushed into oblivion for a long time.

Prior to the beginning of the XVIII century there really stood a castle fortress with semivekovoy history, went through a lot of sieges. In 1543 it was precipitated by the Allied armies - warlike king knight Francis the First and Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. During the Franco-Turkish siege destroyed the northern fortifications, and the Duke of Savoy, Emmanuel Philibert reconstructed defensive system. Upon completion of the city already besieged by the troops of Louis XIV, then the Duke decided to further strengthen the castle. It did not help it: in 1706 during the War of Spanish Succession Louis XIV besieged the fortress again, the castle was turned into ruins and surrendered after 54 days of bombing.

Solid ruins lie on a hilltop until 1830, when the king of Sardinia (Italy predecessor) Charles Felix ordered the creation of the park here. In September 1860 the French emperor Napoleon III came to the annexed Nice and visited Castle Hill. "This is the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen! " - he said.

View from the top of the hill is really fascinating. Hence, with a specially-equipped observation deck on the right see the whole sparkling Bay of Angels, with its six-kilometer promenade on the left - the port of Nice filled with yachts and vessels.

The park is cut whimsically meandering walkways, retaining walls framed by limestone. There are a lot of benches and small cafes. Thick forest (cypress, pine, hornbeam, oak) gives a lot of shade. At the site of the ancient tower noise largest waterfall, built back in 1885. Among the greenery of the ruins of the ancient walls.

Here, on a hill, it is one of the oldest cemeteries of Nice Chateau. Built on the ruins of the ancient citadel, it includes the remains of the walls of the XVI century. About three thousand graves are located terraces. Here are buried, Alexander Herzen, founder of the brand "Mercedes" Emil Jellinek, his mother Rosa Raimondi Giuseppe Garibaldi.

On the hill you can climb on foot through the shady alleys, white on the fun tourist train or arranged in the thickness of the rock free lift. You can not get to the top just by car: they travel in the park is prohibited.
