The main and most crowded train station in Mumbai is the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, named in honor of the Indian national hero. Construction of the station began in 1878 and lasted 10 years, until 1888, although it began its work before the end of construction - in 1882. The main architect of the project was Frederick William Stevens, a fairly well-known at that time in Britain. When designing the station was taken as a model of London St Pancras station. Initially, the station was called "Victoria" - in honor of the Queen of England, but on March 4, 1996, it was renamed.

The station serves the commuter routes, and several long-distance routes, and only has 18 platforms.
