Cathedral of the Descent of the Holy Spirit was built in 1633-42 years. Initially, the building of the cathedral was built for the Catholic Bernardine monastery. The outbreak in 1741 a terrible fire caused extensive damage to the monastery. In 1860 the building was handed over to the Orthodox Church. For nine years, repeated attempts were made repairs and reconstruction, but a full recovery was not enough money. Money has been allocated by the decree of Metropolitan of Minsk and Bobruisk Alexander. After the reconstruction and repair of the men was opened Holy Spirit Monastery.
In the autumn of 1870 it was first consecrated the high altar in honor of Pentecost, then right chapel in honor of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The Holy Spirit convent were transported from Slutsky Holy Trinity Orthodox Monastery precious relics: the icon of Nikita, Bishop of Novgorod, a portrait of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk, reliquary with the relics of revered Orthodox saints, Gospel, personally rewritten Slutsk prince Yuri Olelko.
After the revolution, in 1918 the monastery was closed and looted. From the temple were removed crosses, instead hoisted red flags, and the church building adapted as a prison for the dispossessed peasants. Minsk old-timers say that red flags were immediately thwarted by the wind.
The church was consecrated again in 1943 by Archbishop Philotheus. With the money devout Minsk dweller was made new iconostasis. To collect the required amount, the donor had to sell his two homes. He revived the Holy Spirit Monastery, in which there were only three monks. With the arrival of the Red Army, one of the monks, revered by all known and Archimandrite Seraphim was arrested and died in prison dungeons. He was later canonized.
In spite of the persecution and repression of the Soviet authorities, the revival of the church continued. In 1945, the temple of Holy Spirit was given to the old icon - the image of Our Lady of Minsk. In 1947, the domes were again erected crosses.
In 1990, for the first time since the revolution was carried out procession. From the Cathedral of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in the newly consecrated church of St. Mary Magdalene was transferred the relics of St. Mary Magdalene in particular the Redeemer Cathedral.
Today the Cathedral of the Descent of the Holy Spirit - one of the most revered and beautiful temples of Minsk.
