Templo Mayor - a complex of historic buildings, which is sometimes called the pyramid of Huitzilopochtli. With its main Spanish name translates as "the great temple". Once it housed the State Aztecs - Tenochtitlan, now it is one of the areas of modern Mexico City.

At the height of the pyramid was 60 meters and was the highest architectural structure at that time. At the base of the temple was 100 by 80 meters. On top of the pyramid are two of the temple was erected in honor of the god of the sun and the war - god Huitzilopochtli and the rain and fertility - Tlaloc.

Building Templo Mayor, scientists assumed to pertain to 1325. In the early 16th century, the temple was the religious center of all Aztecs living on the territory of modern Mexico. Over time, the church was erected around many small buildings, which eventually formed a historical complex. Well-preserved one of the most interesting platforms leading to the temple, it is a stand under the skull called tsompantli.

In 1521, when I came here conquistadors led by Hernan Cortes, most of the Templo Mayor and the surrounding area conquerors literally razed to the ground. The lower part of the ruins were discovered February 21, 1978 during the laying of the cable. The workers came upon a large stone disc diameter of at least 3 meters, having a thickness of 30 cm and a weight of 8 tons. The finding was reported by researchers, who for four years excavated. Total found 13 destroyed buildings.

Since 1982 there is a museum, the ruins are also available to visitors.
