On the site of the present Cathedral of Mdina in Roman times was located villa governor Publius, was baptized by the Apostle Paul and became the first Bishop of Malta. Later there was built a church, but in 1693 an earthquake completely destroyed it. The current cathedral was built by the architect Lorenzo Gafa.
Surprisingly proportional to the original facade and dome of the cathedral give an unusually impressive sight. The interior of the church is decorated with gilded carvings and painted vaults and apse. From the old church building preserved wall with a mural Mattia Preti "The Shipwreck of St. Paul." Also noteworthy is the Shrine of the work of Benvenuto Cellini.
In the museum of the Cathedral stores a collection of paintings, prints, drawings from the collection of Count Saverio Marchese. Here you can see works by Dürer, Rembrandt and church clothes, books for choral hymns, a collection of coins.
