Plaza de la Villa is located in the historic center of Madrid, close to the street Mayor, near the Royal Palace.
This small, cozy area, more reminiscent of a small courtyard, has, nevertheless, a great cultural and historical value, because this area of the facades facing three important from an artistic and historical point of view of the buildings. The first of them - the house-tower "de los Luhanes" is an example of Spanish architecture of the 15th century. Front of the house is decorated with a splendid Gothic portal and heraldic emblems. The tower, made of brick and stone, is the most ancient part of the building. There is an opinion that it is in the tower was imprisoned the French king Francis I of Spain during the war with France in the 16th century. Today it is a beautiful building occupies the Royal Academy of Sciences.
Also on the square there is a house-palace, the Casa de Cisneros, an example of a building, built in the style Plateresque. This house was built in 1537 and was intended nephew of Cardinal Cisneros. The facade facing the Plaza de la Villa, was restored in the early 20th century. On the main facade of the building facing the street Sacramento, managed to keep the magnificent architectural and decorative elements.
On the right side of the square is located the Casa de la Villa, whose construction was begun in the mid-17th century and lasted for about 52 years. The building is made in the Baroque style, for years served as a prison, after which it became the seat of the City Council. Of particular interest in the interior of the house deserve - Portrait hall, Goya, a conference room, glass courtyard and others.
