Encarnacion Monastery - one of the largest functioning monasteries in Spain, located in Madrid. Encarnación Monastery was founded in 1611 by Queen Margaret of Austria, wife of Philip III, which give every assistance to its construction.
The monastery was built in the period from 1611 to 1616 under the project of the court architect Alberto de la Madre Dios. The building was erected on the land, where previously housed the house of the Marquis de Pozas redeemed their king. The main facade of the building, constructed in the style of erreresko, used bricks and stone slabs. The facade is decorated with a shield Queen Margaret and the relief image of the Annunciation, made of marble. Start of construction was marked by a ceremony at which the first stone was laid by the king of the building, with the blessing of the Archbishop. Unfortunately, the Queen did not wait for the end of construction of the monastery - after 3 days from the start of construction, she died.
The interior of the building was substantially altered by the architect Ventura Rodriguez after a fire in the monastery in the 18th century. A talented architect made to the interior elements of the neoclassical monastery, adding the original altarpieces and paintings. The interior of the church is also decorated with paintings made by Luca Giordano, the work of Francisco Bayeu, gorgeous tiles, as well as sculptures of Gregorio Fernnadesa and a fine collection of paintings, presented paintings Jose de Ribera and Vincenzo Carducci.
The reliquary relics of saints and the vessel caked blood drops St. Panteleimon. Each year, July 27, the day of the saint's death, the blood becomes liquid, and if one day this will not happen, it was believed, Madrid expect terrible misfortune.
In 1965 the monastery was opened to the public.
