Paul do Mar - a district in the municipality of Calheta. The area stretches along the coast and covers an area of ​​about 1, 4 square kilometers, and according to some - 1, 7 sq.km. The origin of the name of the area due to its geographical location, "Paul" is stretched, elongated area, as evidenced by the district located along the southwestern coast of the island of Madeira.

Originally, the area was known as Sitio da Lago, which translated means "the location of the lake." According to reports, in the past the territory was subjected to flooding when the ocean overflowed and flooded fields. The thickness of the water was sometimes a meter. As a result, there was started the production of salt, but later the activity was discontinued. Since then, how to build a new, better fortified mound against the onset of the sea, the tides of the ocean became less intimidating.

On the territory of Paul do Mar has a Catholic church, which was consecrated in honor of the patron saint of the district, Santo Amaro (St. Maur), who was a disciple of Saint Benedict of Nursia.

Today, to Paul do Mar can be reached by two roads: one connects the area with Porto Moniz, Santana, Calheta and Funchal, and the second connects the Paul do Mar with Fajã da Ovelia Accommodations and Jardim do Mar and runs along the Atlantic Ocean. And until the end of the 60's to the settlement could be reached only by boat.

Paul do Mar - one of the most important fishing center in the archipelago. On the territory of Paul do Mar is 5 settlements: Igreja, Lagoa, Quebrada, Cerrado da Cruz and Ribeira das Galinhas.
