At the beginning of the XIX century Jews get official permission from the authorities to live in the city of Liberec. Of course, Jews settled here in the past, but they were few. As such, the Jewish community was not there until the end of the XVIII century.
To perform religious services, they initially used three houses and then decided to build a synagogue. It was built quite late compared to other Czech cities - in 1899, but hit all the inhabitants of the city with its grandeur and splendor. She graced the tower of 39 meters, which rose over the central area and divert attention from the town hall and the Municipal Theater, which was located nearby. Unfortunately, the synagogue long to please their parishioners. The Kristallnacht November 10, 1938 crazed townspeople burned the building. However, it was empty for a few months before that time, for many Jewish families left their homes and migrated away from the anti-Semitic local thugs.
For the construction of a new synagogue did not look for another place. By decision of the local residents, the new building in futuristic style was built on the spot where stood the old synagogue. Its construction was started in 1997. Before the new structure can be seen on the pavement marked tile contour of the old building.
The area of the new synagogue is 245 square meters. This building is unique also because it is the first building of its kind in the Czech Republic after the Second World War.
Nowadays, part of the synagogue occupied by the scientific foundations of the local library.
