Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is located on one of the town squares named Masaryk. This church is the oldest sacred stone building Kroměříž. It was founded by the Knights of Malta, and was first mentioned in chronicles in 1238. Solid Gothic cathedral immediately became the most visited temple Kroměříž. In the XIV century it was rebuilt several times, trying to achieve perfection. Then the funds for permanent restoration finished, the cathedral stood a long time without an update, so gradually began to deteriorate. Citizens at the general meeting decided to repair it makes no sense, and it is better to build a new cathedral instead. So they did: destroyed the existing church and its facade erected a new one - in the fashionable baroque style. It was in the years 1736-1768.
New Cathedral turned majestic and pompous. It was decorated with two slender twin towers. Significant reconstruction of the cathedral is no longer worried, so today tourists can see it exactly the way it was conceived in the XVIII century.
Unfortunately, the Cathedral is open only during the Mass. During the rest of his interiors can be seen only from behind the iron lattice. Its walls are lined with marble and decorated with precious paintings, which depict scenes from the Holy Scriptures. From niche to look down the holy congregation, etched in stone. There in the cathedral choirs for singing, and traditional authority. In this temple, excellent acoustics, so the music sounding under the vault of the cathedral, seems particularly beautiful.
Facing the cathedral, take the time to go into it, and carefully look around. On Masarykovo Square you can see the school, which trains future priests, and the house where the priests lived.
