The Armenian Church of the Holy Virgin - one of the main attractions of Chisinau, which is located in the historic center of the city.

The date of foundation of the Church is called in 1804. It is believed that it was built on the site of an old Moldovan churches burned down in a fire in 1739 during the Russian-Turkish war. The new church was erected at the expense of the Armenian Baron Hovhannes son Akopgyana and other wealthy representatives of the Armenian community. The names of all the sponsors listed on a memorial plate located at the entrance to the temple. The author of the project and the architect made famous in those days, the architect - Vardanyan from Iasi.

In architectural terms, the Church of the Holy Virgin is a single-nave building with a semicircular apse, which is attached to the west side of the tower with a tent covering. Classic features of Armenian religious architecture can be traced in lancet arches, decorative columns and capitals. The walls and ceiling of the temple is made of stone and brick lined.

In 1917 the building of the church was built of hewn stone portico, an architect who made the famous Russian architect with Italian roots - Alexander Bernardazzi. It is noteworthy that under the portico are three burial. One was awarded this honor became Dragoman Manuk - Bey, a senior official and an important person in the Ottoman Empire. According to some reports his real name Emanuel Myrzayan and he was an Armenian. Legend has it that he was able to escape from the Turks together with hundreds of other fellow, taking the treasury of the Turkish vizier, and found refuge in Chisinau, who at the time was under Russian jurisdiction.

In 1885, it has undergone extensive reconstruction of the church, which has dramatically changed his appearance - built a new dome, increased the height of the towers and walls, completely replaced the roof and floor.

At all times the Armenian Church of the Holy Mother of God was the center of spiritual and cultural life of the city. However, during the Soviet era the church was closed, and its building was given to the needs of the travel agency. After the collapse of the Soviet Union building of the church was returned to believers.

Today the church activities, and although in need of restoration of the interior, looks solid and monumental, attracting the attention of many visitors to its greatness.
