Cathedral of the Nativity - the main Orthodox church in the city of Chisinau, an architectural monument of the XIX century.

Start of construction of the cathedral, initiated by the Bessarabian Metropolitan Gavriil Banulescu Bodoni, dates back 1930-1936 years. The author of the project was architect A. Melnikov. The cathedral was built in the style of Russian classicism and has four facades, which are flanked by a portico with six columns and pediments each. Near the temple erected a four-tower. The interior of the temple were decorated with magnificent frescoes.

During the Second World War, in June 1941, the cathedral was heavily damaged by bombing, but its restoration began after a few months. In 1962, by order of the city administration bell tower was blown up, and the building is transferred to the Cathedral Exhibition Centre, Ministry of Culture of the USSR.

The church was returned to believers only in the early 90s, began the restoration and rebuilding of the temple, which lasted six long years. In 1995, the President of Moldova issued a decree "to accelerate the restoration of the Cathedral of the Nativity" and the following year all the works have been completed. Work was done to restore the bell tower, installed and consecrated Cross Cathedral. Construction of the bell tower completed in 1997, in appearance it is somewhat different from the original construction. Restoration of the interior decoration and decoration of the cathedral is over today.

Today, the Cathedral of the Nativity is the main and one of the most visited temples Chisinau Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.
