Historical Museum in Kardzhali is located in a building built in the early XX century. Originally it was intended for madrassas, but never acted in this role. The museum is surrounded by park, where grow typical for Bulgaria (and found only here) species.
From 1934 and until 1947 the building was exploited for military purposes. After it became an official branch of the University of Plovdiv and at the same time - the school. The museum building is redeveloped in the 1980s. In 2005 the building was declared an architectural monument at the national level on the orders of the Minister of Culture.
The total area of the exhibition halls - 1300 sq.m. The first floor is occupied by nine rooms, which chronologically presents the life of the region from the VI millennium BC and up to the Middle Ages. Of particular interest is the reconstructed mound Neolithic "Selishtna grave", as well as pictures of sanctuaries, rock tombs. Here there are Roman ceramics, obrok plates, jewelry and of cemeteries and so on.
The second floor is divided into four rooms here recreated the natural features of the eastern part of Rodopi. Among other things, you can see fossils - fossils of sea urchins, clams and stars, trees and corals and fish. In addition, the museum has photos of unique rock formations ("stone mushrooms", "Elephant", "Broken Mountain," "The Petrified Forest" and others) and a collection of ore minerals and herbs.
The third floor is dedicated to an ethnographic exhibition, which is housed in ten rooms. Exhibits included in the exhibition belong to the XIX-XX centuries. Specialists were reconstructed typical regional crafts: agriculture, metal working, breeding, shoemaking and other. Homemade crafts craftsmanship presented spinners and knitters.
