Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in the Christian quarter can not be ignored - it is almost fifty-meter bell tower striking distance. The church, consecrated in 1898 - the latest in the old town, but the history of the area Muristan where it stands, goes back to earlier times.

The majestic building in the Neo-Romanesque style contrasts with its surroundings: right at the entrance to the temple - the Greek market stalls "Avtimos." However, tourists pay attention to the sculptures around the church doors: the lamb, the eagle with folded wings (the symbol of the German Empire), the Maltese cross. Entrance on the north side, too, is remarkable: it is built arch times of the Crusaders. These details are reminiscent of the history of these places and the church itself.

At the beginning of the XI century Italian merchants from Amalfi erected here Hospital and the church of Santa Maria Latina. Later, when Jerusalem was conquered by the Crusaders, the building was used as a shelter and a temple for the sick and wounded soldiers and pilgrims. It is on the territory of present Muristan arose one of the most famous medieval orders - Hospitallers, or Maltese. The Hospitallers took a quarter, but in 1187 he was in shambles after the fall of Jerusalem under the onslaught of the Sultan Saladin.

In the XIX century the Sultan Abdul Aziz gave part of the district of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and some - the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm. The construction of the church on the site was donated by the Berlin architect entrusted Friedrich Adler. The imposing building Adler put on the spot where once stood the Santa Maria Latina and with surprising delicacy combined with new part of the ruins of the walls. At the dedication of the Church of the Savior was present Kaiser Wilhelm II - it was the first visit in a long time the European monarch to the Holy Land. Kaiser also was directly involved in the design of the bell tower - he wanted to make it like a bell tower of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Tivoli.

Then inside the Church of the Savior I looked more magnificent than it is now: painted walls, mosaic. Interior changed after reconstruction in 1970 - now it is simple, even severe. Against the background of gray walls stand gold stained glass works of Israeli artist Anna Anders Marcus. The current organ was installed in 1971. Cross for the process is created in 1998, German sculptor Hubertus von Pilgrim. But something preserved from the XIX century - so the altar is visible on the second date, "October 22, 1898".

Under the temple at a depth of 13 meters were conducted archaeological excavations. Some discoveries open to the public: you can see the mosaic floor, the rest of the church of Santa Maria Latina, part of the cobbled streets, the remains of an ancient quarry and part of the walls of the Late Roman period.

On the bell tower, too, must rise. At the top of the leads is very narrow and steep staircase of 177 steps. With the ascent of the bell can be seen - they call every hour, so it is best to carefully choose the time of visit. But these inconveniences are forgotten at the top, where tourists a magnificent panorama of Jerusalem.
