At the end of the street on August 25, which leads from the city center to the Venetian fortress Koules in the old harbor of the town are Venetian Arsenal (Navy Yard).

Heraklion Harbour has always been an important part of the city and the Cretan civilization as a whole. At the time of the Venetian port of Heraklion was an important commercial center of trade. Since the Venetian fleet was based exclusively in the Mediterranean, the Venetians built a shipyard in all their ports, thus providing full maintenance of their ships and the ability to quickly and safely to sail from port to port. It also carried out the construction of new military and commercial ships. There were in the construction and special facilities for the storage of weapons and ammunition.

Construction of the Venetian shipyards in Heraklion was a large-scale project, which was carried out in four phases and lasted from the 15th to the 17th century. There were built 19 yards, grouped in three sets. They are interconnected via arched openings, the door is closed. It has survived only 5 or 6 yards, and then in part. We can only see the large oblong dilapidated buildings with arched roofs, which are only part of the grand structures and held in Venice during most of the old port. Unfortunately, much of the Venetian Arsenal was destroyed in 1930 in connection with the construction of a new harbor and the coastal road. Right on top of the old walls built new homes.

Between the shipyards was salt warehouse. Next to the last yard there is a large water reservoir (capacity of 20,000 barrels).
