Heraklion was built by the Arabs in the IX century. Then he called Handakas. In the Middle Ages the Venetians was surrounded by city walls in length of 5 km. On the small square in the center is a beautiful marble fountain, named after the Venetian general Morosini. Also survived several Venetian houses.

The pride of the city is a rich archaeological museum. Here are all the most important artifacts of the Minoan culture: ceramics, stone carving, carved printing, sculpture, gold jewelry, metal products, beautiful frescoes from the palaces and mansions of the rich and unique stone sarcophagus of Agia Triad.

Historical Museum of the City presents exhibits of the Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish periods and historical documents of the modern history of Crete. Here are also local folk costumes, woven products, wood carving, embroidery and other items of decorative art.
