Cornaro Area is one of the most popular places in the city of Heraklion. The name of the square was named after the great Cretan poet Vitsenzo Kornaros, which is representative of the Cretan Renaissance.
In the area of Cornaro it is the oldest surviving fountain city, dating from the 16th century and known as the "Fountain Bembo." The fountain is named after the builder of his Venetian Dzhanmatteo Bembo. The fountain is made of pieces of ancient marble (presumably, from the fragments of Roman sarcophagi). Facade construction with columns and pilasters decorated with reliefs of Venetian coats of arms. In the center of the fountain installed headless Roman statue of a man brought from Ierapetra.
Near the fountain is a sculpture: a bronze statue of horseman and his beloved Erotokritou Arethusa (the heroes of the famous poem "Erotokrit" Vitsenzo Kornaros, which is considered one of his best works). The sculpture is made in full size.
In the days of Venetian rule on the place of modern sculpture was now ruined Temple of Christ the Savior (Spassky Cathedral). It was a magnificent elongated structure, which managed to survive despite the numerous earthquakes, repeatedly destroyed Heraklion. Later, during the Ottoman Empire, the church, like most of the Venetian architectural masterpieces, was converted into a mosque dedicated to Sultan Walid. In 1960, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior was demolished.
The square is also the old Turkish furniture, remodeled into a cozy coffee shop. Here you can relax, enjoy the Venetian fountain and enjoy a delicious coffee.
