Ouranoupoli - a picturesque coastal town in Halkidiki. It is located about 140 km from Thessaloniki in the beginning of the Athos peninsula and is the last town before the possessions of the monastic state of Mount Athos - one of the main shrines of the Orthodox world.
Among the main attractions of the city of Ouranoupoli is worth noting an interesting exhibition of Christian art, which was founded by the 10th Department of Byzantine Antiquities. The exhibition is located in the old boathouse (the building dates from the 18th century and was formerly owned by Vatopedi monastery) near the city pier next to the Byzantine tower.
The exhibits presented at the exhibition of Christian art were collected from different parts of Halkidiki, and date back to early Christian, Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods. On the ground floor you can see the 14 portable icons (18th - early 20th century), including special attention deserves the icon of the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus, dating back to 1728 year, the murals of the chapel of the Holy Trinity (16-17 century), bronze Cross (11-12 century) and other items of religious art.
On the second floor are ancient artifacts found during archaeological work on the peninsula - ceramics, coins, jewelry, oil lamps, arrowheads, burial relics and more of Potidea, Toroni, Paliokastro, Galatista, burial in Ierissos, etc. .d. Of particular interest are architectural fragments of an early Christian basilica of St. George and Sophronia of Nikiti.
