In the coastal park "Casuarina" is taken under the protection of some 1,500 hectares of the coastal strip between the deltas of Rapid Creek and Buffalo Creek near Darwin. The park includes the 8 km of sandy beaches, steep cliffs and an array of shade-loving trees casuarina. Behind the dunes are located typical for the northern Australian coastal plant communities - monsoon forests, mangroves and the so-called paper trees.
Aboriginal tribe larrakiya (larrakia) protect these sacred site for them, having a great cultural and religious significance. For example, the Old Man of Stone "Dariba Nunggalinia» (Dariba Nunggalinya), visible during low tide from the observation deck on the cliff Dripstoun. Despite the fact that fishing is permitted, move the stone from the place or catching shellfish at this place is prohibited. Also in the park is an artillery observation post during the Second World War, reminiscent of the fighting in those areas.
Among the dunes you can see the red-black cockatoos, sea hawks, eagles, cormorants and gulls soaring in search of prey. A huge variety of tropical marine life found in the waters at low tide. Sometimes the park penetrate saltwater crocodiles. During the rainy season - from October to May - in waters inhabited by a jellyfish, so swimming is prohibited.
Since the park is one of the favorite places of the residents of Darwin, there are all conditions for comfortable one-day stay. From the bridge over the Rapid Creek bike path begins, which could be used and pedestrians. Throughout the territory there are special areas for picnics and shaded gazebo where you can hide from the sun. An interesting feature of the park - the presence of specially marked places for nudists north of the picnic area Dripstoun.
