In 3-4 km south of the town of Chios (capital of the island of the same name) in a beautiful fertile valley among the citrus groves that are so famous for the region, lies the small town of Kambos - one of the most interesting and picturesque villages of the island. Kambos is famous for its magnificent architecture, and stunning scenery.

The history of the settlement is since Byzantine times. In the same period of domination on the island of Chios to the Genoese and later the Turks, Kampos prospered and became very popular with the local aristocracy, which has built here their luxury stone villas. Two and three-storey houses, as a rule, were surrounded by high massive walls, behind which lurk buried in the greenery of a spacious courtyard.

Unfortunately, in 1822 during the infamous massacre of Chios Kambos it was looted and partially destroyed. The catastrophic consequences and brought a strong earthquake in 1881. However, in the twentieth century, a substantial part of the beautiful medieval buildings was restored as much as possible while maintaining their original appearance (in some old mansions today are equipped with comfortable hotels).

Today Kambos is considered an important historical and architectural monument. Despite many wars and a devastating earthquake, as well as close proximity to the capital, Kambos managed to preserve the unique atmosphere of the medieval villages, where you can harmoniously combine a wide variety of architectural styles of different eras. Walking through the cozy streets of the old town will allow you to make a small excursion into the past, and will bring a lot of fun and unforgettable experience.
