Venetian harbor town of Chania is located in the old city. During the Venetian domination the city of Chania is a highly advanced in the field of maritime trade with well-established export and import, despite the absence of a large and safe harbor. The very location of the harbor is not an ideal place for building and heavily dependent on weather conditions. Nevertheless, the local authorities decided to build a port. Harbour supposed to be used for commercial purposes, and to control the water area from the raids of pirates.

Venetian harbor in Chania was built by the Venetians in 1320-1356 years. The harbor was small in size and is designed only 40 galleys. It is no different, and depth. The north side of the harbor is protected by a breakwater, the middle of which there is a small playground with facilities for guns and a small chapel of St. Nicholas. At the entrance to the harbor is located Firka fortress, built in 1629. At the entrance to the castle today houses the Maritime Museum of Crete. It is in this fortress 1 December 1913 the Greek flag was raised in honor of the unification of Crete with Greece. Above the entrance to the harbor stands as a majestic lighthouse, which today as it was built by the Egyptians on the orders of Mehmet Ali in 1830-1840 gg. Another attraction is the Venetian harbor Muslim mosque, built in 1645 (one of the first Turkish buildings on the island) and well preserved to this day.

Today Venetian harbor town is a historical monument and one of the favorite places for tourists and locals, and serves the port of Chania Court, located on the opposite side of the isthmus. Along the coastline there are many restaurants, bars and cafes. You can not just sit back and try the Mediterranean cuisine, but also enjoy the beautiful panoramic view. The old harbor is today used as a pier for fishing boats and small excursion boats.
